5 Effortless Ways to Keep Your Home Clutter-Free
Feeling overwhelmed by clutter but don’t have time for a full decluttering session? The good news is decluttering doesn’t have to be a big project. With small, mindful habits, you can maintain a clutter-free home effortlessly—no marathon cleanouts required!
Have you ever been there? You decide today is the day to clean out the entire hall closet so you take everything out and begin sorting. But then 10 minutes in, you remember today is early pick up at your child’s school. On the way home, you have to run a few errands and grab some groceries. You get home, put all the groceries away, start dinner and BAM, you see everything from the hall closet covering the couch, loveseat and dining room table! Ugh, it’s too much to deal with now so you shove it all back in the closet and it looks worse than before. I’ll be honest, taking everything out to sort and declutter is not my favorite way to get clutter free.

There’s a Better Way to Declutter
I discovered that chipping away at my clutter was the best way to get rid of a lot of it! And bonus, I rarely made huge overwhelming messes. Here’s another big decluttering tip for you: once you’ve chipped away at all your clutter and your home’s inventory is more manageable, then clearing out those spaces is so much more doable. It doesn’t create a huge mess when you only have to go through some games, seasonal outerwear and a couple of storage boxes! It’s easy to declutter regularly and maintain when you have less stuff. And these quick decluttering tips will get you there faster and practically without you even being aware that you’re decluttering!
Let’s get started and I’ll help you organize your home daily without any extra effort.
1. The “Grab & Toss” Rule
One of the easiest decluttering tricks for busy moms is the Grab & Toss Rule—whenever you walk from one room to another, grab one item that doesn’t belong and put it away.
- Found an empty water bottle on the nightstand? Toss it in recycling on your way to the kitchen.
- Noticed a pair of shoes by the door? Take them to the closet when you walk past.
- Heading to the kitchen? Take any empty coffee mugs, snack wrappers, or stray utensils from the living room with you.
- Walking past the laundry room? Pick up that random sock on the floor or toss a forgotten dish towel into the hamper.
- Going upstairs? Grab a toy, book, or piece of clothing that belongs in a bedroom and put it away on your way.
- Leaving the bathroom? Take out empty shampoo bottles or that used-up candle that no longer serves a purpose.
- Passing by the entryway? Hang up jackets, put shoes in the closet, or toss junk mail that’s been sitting on the table.
This simple decluttering habit prevents clutter from piling up and keeps your home tidy without setting aside extra time.

2. Declutter While Watching TV
Who says decluttering your home has to be boring? Combine it with something you already enjoy—like watching Netflix or listening to a podcast!
Quick decluttering ideas to try during TV time:
- Sort through a messy drawer in your sofa table or end table.
- Sort mail – Toss expired coupons or old mail.
- Declutter your phone – Delete unnecessary photos, emails, or apps.
- Sort through your junk drawer – Toss old receipts, broken pens, and anything you don’t need.
- Declutter your purse or wallet – Get rid of old receipts, expired coupons, and unnecessary cards.
- Fold and put away laundry – Match socks, fold towels, or organize your dresser drawers.
- Declutter your coffee table – Remove outdated magazines, wipe down surfaces, and put away stray items.
- Go through your makeup or toiletries – Toss expired products, empty bottles, or items you no longer use.
- Shred old papers – If you have a stack of documents to shred, take care of them while watching a show.
- Untangle and organize cords – Sort out messy cables, label them, or store unused ones properly.
- Match food storage containers – Pair lids with their containers and get rid of any mismatched pieces.
By multitasking, you’ll make becoming clutter-free feel effortless while still enjoying your downtime.

3. Clear One Surface Before Bed
Want to wake up to a clutter-free home? Make it a nightly habit to clear off one surface before bed—your kitchen counter, nightstand, or coffee table.
A tidy space in the morning sets a positive tone for the day and prevents clutter from getting out of control. This quick decluttering trick takes less than five minutes but makes a huge difference.
4. Keep a “Donation Bin” Handy
Instead of waiting for a big decluttering day, set up a designated donation bin in your closet, laundry room, or garage. Every time you find something you don’t use, don’t love, or don’t need, drop it in the bin.
Decluttering made simple:
- If it’s stained, torn, or broken beyond repair, trash it.
- If it’s in good condition but unused, donate it.
Once the bin is full, schedule a donation drop-off. This effortless decluttering method keeps unused items from piling up.
5. Follow the “One In, One Out” Rule
A major cause of clutter is bringing in new things without removing old ones. The One In, One Out Rule ensures you maintain balance in your home.
Decluttering rule: For every new item you bring in, remove one old item.
- Buying a new sweater? Donate one you haven’t worn in a year.
- Getting a new toy for your kids? Pass along an older one they’ve outgrown.
- Upgrading kitchen gadgets? Get rid of duplicates or unused tools.
This simple organization habit keeps clutter under control without extra effort.

Declutter Without the Overwhelm
Becoming clutter-free doesn’t have to be stressful or time-consuming. By making these simple decluttering habits part of your daily routine, you’ll keep your home organized without even trying.
