Easy Tips For Keeping Your Car Clean and Organized

A clean, clutter-free car makes every drive so much more enjoyable—no more digging through piles of stuff to find what you need or cringing at mystery smells from under the seats. Whether it’s your daily commute or a weekend road trip, a tidy car helps reduce stress and keeps things running smoothly. But with busy schedules and life constantly on the go, it’s easy for crumbs, wrappers, and who-knows-what to pile up, leaving your car looking (and smelling) less than fresh. The good news? A few simple habits and smart organization tricks can make all the difference. Here’s how to keep your car clean, organized, and smelling great.

1. Develop the Habit of Emptying Your Car

One of the simplest ways to maintain a clean car is to make it a habit to take everything out when you get home. Whether it’s kids’ toys, shopping bags, or gym gear, make it a routine to unload your car at the end of the day. Everyone who rides in, or drives the car, should be included in this activity. If the kids brought it into the car with them, they can take it out when they get out. Did you eat dinner in the car on the way to baseball practice? Have everyone gather their trash once you arrive and throw it away at practice. Teaching everyone to make this a habit will keep your car cleaner (and smelling better!). So take one minute upon arrival at your destination or home to look around, gather it all up and take it in!

I keep a grocery tote bag in the door of my car so I can just grab everything all at once and take it all in. Once inside, I sort through it just like I do any other random items in my house:

  • Toss the trash
  • Put things away where they go
  • Donate what I no longer need

2. Quick Cleans for Families on the Go

For families constantly on the move, quick cleaning sessions can be a lifesaver. Here are a few ideas:

  • Keep a Trash Bag Handy: Use a small, reusable bag or a designated trash can to collect wrappers, receipts, and other waste. Empty it regularly to prevent clutter.
  • Wipe Down Surfaces: Keep a pack of disinfectant wipes in your glove compartment. A quick wipe of the dashboard, steering wheel, and door handles can make a big difference, especially during cold and flu season.
  • Vacuum Regularly: If you have a portable vacuum or access to one at a car wash, make it a habit to do a quick vacuum every couple of weeks to keep crumbs and dirt at bay.
  • Drive Through Car Wash: I do this about once a month and man oh man, is it getting expensive! But I think it’s an important part of taking care of my car. And let’s face it, whether your car is newer or older, it was most likely a significant investment so why not take good care of that investment.

3. Keeping It Clean When You’re Living Out of It

If your car often doubles as a second home—whether for road trips, long commutes, or busy schedules—keeping it organized is essential. Here are some tips:

  • Designate a ‘Car Home’ for Essentials: Create a designated space for items you frequently use, like a travel mug, sunglasses, or a blanket. This will help you quickly find what you need without rummaging through your car.
  • Use Storage Solutions: Invest in organizers that fit your vehicle’s layout. Seatback organizers, trunk bins, or under-seat storage can help keep things in their place and easy to access.
  • Limit the Number of Items: Be selective about what you keep in your car. Regularly assess what you need and remove anything that’s no longer necessary.

4. Organizing Regularly Kept Items

To maintain an organized car, consider creating a small bin or caddy for essential items. I keep my essentials in that little compartment between the front seats. Here’s a list of what I include:

  • First Aid Kit: Having a basic first aid kit on hand is always a good idea for minor emergencies.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Keep a bottle in your car for quick clean-ups after outings.
  • Change for parking meters: I keep my loose change inside a little coin purse just so it’s not making a mess.
  • Pens and small notepad: You never know when you’ll need to write something down quickly or play a game of Hangman while you’re waiting somewhere.
  • Pocket Knife: My pocket knife comes in handy around the house and the barn ALL THE TIME and the one in my car is no exception. I use it to open plastic containers, boxes, remove tags and more!
  • Ibuprofen and aspirin: This one is self explanatory I think.

In a small zippered canvas bag, I keep a few other essentials:

  • Paper Towels: These are handy for spills or messes that need immediate attention.
  • Jumper Cables: Thankfully I’ve never had to “get a jump” from a stranger, but I like to be prepared for emergencies!

For road trips, we ALWAYS have a small cooler with water bottles and snacks.
