Honest Ruggable Review: My Opinion After 4 Years

I’ve revised my opinion of my Ruggable rug many times over the years. And the Ruggable review I’m writing today is very different from the one I would have written a couple of years ago. Owning it for over four years has given me plenty of time to see how it really holds up to daily life.

You can see that it has a few “waves” in it and doesn’t lay entirely flat. You can also see my pup, Copper…basically the reason I must have a washable rug!

But first, let’s talk about Ruggable as a concept. I chose Ruggable for one reason and one reason only: I can wash it! And I have plenty of reasons to need a washable rug—dogs, horse and barn dirt getting tracked in, grandkids, and let’s be honest, my husband and I spill stuff sometimes. We just don’t have the kind of house where nothing ever happens and everything stays pristine all the time. I’m guessing if you’re here reading this, you don’t either!

What is a Ruggable Rug?

Ruggable rugs are a two-part system. The top layer is lightweight, almost like a thin blanket, and it sticks to the base layer with a very light Velcro-like grip. The base itself is slightly (and I do mean slightly!) cushioned, giving it a little more comfort underfoot. This design allows the top layer to be easily removed and tossed in the washing machine—one of the biggest selling points for me when I made my purchase.

Why I Chose a Ruggable Rug

As I already mentioned, I picked a Ruggable rug for one reason: it’s washable. At the time, that feature was more important to me than ever. My hound dog had just been diagnosed with a thyroid issue, and before we figured out what was wrong, he started having accidents in the house—something he hadn’t done since he was a puppy.

I had a beautiful wool rug that I loved, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the urine smell out. I tried everything—DIY methods, enzymatic cleaners, and even professional cleaning. The professionals quoted me a cleaning price that was more than I originally paid for the rug! I assume because it was a thick, high-quality wool rug, it was a more involved cleaning process? I don’t know for sure. Either way, I wasn’t about to spend that much money on cleaning, only to risk another accident while we worked on my dog’s treatment plan.

After several failed cleaning attempts (where I thought I had finally solved the problem, only for the smell to come creeping back), I had to admit defeat. Out the old rug went!

Since my entire house is tile, I knew I needed another rug for my living room, but I wasn’t about to go through the same ordeal again. I started researching washable rugs, and of course Ruggable was one of the original washable rugs. The concept of a fully machine-washable rug really, really appealed to me—so I decided to give it a shot.

Some Questions I Had Before Purchasing a Ruggable

One of the main reasons I decided to write this Ruggable review is that I couldn’t find a review out there that addressed the concerns I had before purchasing. Here were my concerns:

  • Durability – Would it hold up over time?
  • Cushioning – We were used to the plush feel of our previous rug, and Ruggable’s two-piece system didn’t seem as padded. Spoiler alert: it isn’t very padded at all!
  • Washing a Large Rug – I needed a 9’ x 12’ size, and I wasn’t sure how practical it would be to wash something that large in my washing machine.

Despite those concerns, the design and color options won me over. I ended up choosing the Kamran Royal Blue rug, and I absolutely loved the colors and pattern (more on that later!).

My Ruggable Review

First Impressions & Initial Experience

To begin my Ruggable review, I’ll start with my first impressions…..not great. While I thought the rug was beautiful, it was also much thinner than I expected. It didn’t feel very comfortable underfoot, and my older dogs didn’t seem too eager to lay on it either. Compared to the plush, cushioned feel of my previous wool rug, this was a definite downgrade in comfort.

Setup was fairly easy, but within just a few days, I noticed an issue—the edges started curling up. I tried everything to fix it: taping them down with rug tape, stomping on them, laying heavy objects on the corners… but nothing seemed to work. No matter what I did, the edges kept lifting, making the rug look sloppy and, honestly, frustrating to deal with. Not to mention, they were a total tripping hazard!

At this point, my enthusiasm for my new rug started to wane… a lot.

I love the color and design and it matches the colors in my tile PERFECTLY, but it doesn’t always lay entirely flat and the edges sometimes buckle or curl.

Ruggable Review: Long-Term Performance

To put it simply—I didn’t love the rug. While I had high hopes for it, over time, it just didn’t meet my expectations.

I washed it a few times as needed, but because I had the 9’ x 12’ size, it was honestly too large to get truly clean even in my extra-large capacity washing machine. Every time I washed it, I had to run it through multiple cycles just to get all the dirt and grime out. I had also hoped that washing it would help the curled edges finally lay flat—but no such luck.

After dealing with constantly curled edges that made the rug look messy and cheap, I finally gave up. I got so tired of how awful it looked that I ended up giving it away. In the end, I bought another nice wool rug and just prayed my dog’s medical issue was fully healed so I wouldn’t have to deal with the same problem again.

Doggie Accidents = The Return of the Ruggable

For a while, everything went smoothly—no pet accidents. But eventually, disaster struck. My old hound dog started having medical issues again, and unfortunately, that meant I had another ruined rug on my hands.

As fate would have it, the person I had originally given my Ruggable to reached out. She told me that the person she had passed it along to no longer wanted it and asked if I wanted it back. At that point, I figured—why not?

So, I took it back, washed it several times, and put it down again. A washable rug was better than no rug at all, even if I wasn’t thrilled about those persistent curled edges. At that point, I was resigned to my curly-edged Ruggable for the rest of my dog’s life.

Still Not Happy With My Ruggable

wasn’t exactly thrilled to have my Ruggable back. Sure, it was a washable, but I still hated how sloppy it looked with its curled edges. It made the whole room feel unkempt, no matter how much I straightened it.

Hoping for a real solution, I reached out to Ruggable’s customer service. I figured that after all these years, they must have come up with a fix for this common issue. No luck. Their best advice? Lay a damp towel over the curled edges and iron them flat.

As you can imagine, that didn’t work at all.

Determined to find a fix, I turned to the internet and found a suggestion to use a steam mop on the edges. That actually worked… for a little while. But over time, the edges curled right back up, and I was back to square one.

At this point, I was fed up with my Ruggable rug. The washable aspect was great, but the constant battle with curled edges wasn’t worth it. Since I knew I still needed a washable rug, I started researching other brands to see if I could find a better option—one that wouldn’t come with the same frustrations.

I decided it was time to try a different brand and see if I would have the same issues. Before I could purchase my next washable rug, something happened…

An Unexpected Discovery That Made My Ruggable a Little Better

Another doggie accident began a new discovery and helped change the course of my Ruggable review….slightly.

I did my usual thing and washed it. First, I took it outside, rinsed off the stain, and gave it a prewash before running it through the washing machine five times. It was a sunny day, so I decided to lay it flat on my back patio in full sun to dry, rather than hanging it over my fence as I had in the past.

Once it was dry, I brought it back inside and noticed something surprising—the edges stayed almost entirely flat this time! Somehow, “baking” it in the sun for nearly an entire day had helped flatten out the curled edges.

At this point, I started to see my Ruggable in a slightly new light. It was still washable, and—miraculously—those pesky edges were finally laying flat.

Maybe I didn’t totally hate this thing after all!

After years of frustration, I finally felt like I was getting the benefits I had originally hoped for when I bought the rug. It wasn’t perfect, but it was starting to win me over again.

The Design Flaw I Can’t Unsee

My Ruggable review wouldn’t be complete without this part, my last issue with this rug—the design I originally loved.

I don’t really know how to put this… so I’ll just say it: The center of this rug looks like a bunch of male genetalia and I can’t unsee it!

I had owned the rug for a long time at this point. One day, while vacuuming, something in the center pattern just jumped out at me. I stared at it, wondering if I was imagining things. But when I showed it to my husband, he immediately saw the same thing!

And now? That’s all I see when I look at this rug. Ugh.

You decide for yourself.

Final Thoughts: A Rug I’ve Come to (sort of) Appreciate

After years of ups and downs with my Ruggable rug, I can honestly say I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more. It’s far from perfect—I still don’t love how thin it is, and I can’t unsee the weird design issue—but I finally solved the biggest frustration: those pesky curled edges.

At the end of the day, the fact that I can wash it and reuse it makes it a solid option for a home like mine, where messes are just part of life. Would I buy another Ruggable? As long as my old dogs are still alive, then yes—but only if I really love the design (and double-check it for any surprises first!).

If you’re considering a Ruggable, I hope my Ruggable review helps you make an informed decision. And if you already have one and struggle with curled edges—try letting it bake in the sun for a day or more. It just might do the trick!
